.......THE BAND AND RECORD OF THE MONTH |
. | NOVEMBER 2017 |
Comments:
We arrived at the end of 2017, a year with many, and many and excellent releases, both for the new bands and the bands that for reasons of their own, did not record any music, but returned in high style. Among many of this releases, I would like to point out a musician and his debut album, Steve Tilling, songwriter, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, a veteran musician and already consecrated for having participated in some projects. After five years Steve Tilling, together with the help of musicians such as Dave Gregory (XTC, Big Big Train), Phil Spalding (Mike Oldfield), Matt Backer (ABC), Alan van Kleef (Rachel Stamp), Johnny Warman (Peter Gabriel) and Andy Neve (Steve Hackett), finally, released his debut album titled such as Circu5. Circu5 sounds like a mix of styles influecied by many references from the past together with modern elements, a interesting mix of Progressive Rock from England and Germany. Their music is so expressive and surrounding, that some times sound strong, some times melodic and some times symphonic, of course Steve Tilling knows how to use the perfect doses, mixing established styles like Progressive Rock, Symphonic Progressive Rock, Melodic Rock, Art Rock with some elements from Neo-Prog, Folk and Classic Rock. The smart lyrics, the music, the arrangements, the sounds, the vocal, all instrumental parts are generated by nice melodic performances, that really the musicians show a consistent, mature and highly original work, using high degree of musical expertise adding strong creativity, all this can be noticed by the high degree of musicians' professionalism and life experiences. "Circu5" is Steve Tilling's debut album, being exclusively distributed by leading UK progressive rock label Burnig Shed. The album include twelve tracks, almost 50 minutes of aimpressive musical delight. The production is composed in a digpack format, including 28-page booklet, as also a card with a code to download the songs. The instrumental on the album and the arrangements are leaded by Steve Tilling, with awesome guitar solos, that dominates almost all the compositions, prominent keyboards full of atmospheric passages, adding an vibrant bass sound, with a perfect drums, but the main highlight, is his voice around many vocals tones, which fit perfectly into the arrangements, his voices gives all the charm to the instrumental and is a very important point, in the orchestral performance of the album. It is hard to determine which are the best songs on the album, because, all songs specifically are excellent, however, I have my favorites one, and here they are: "Stars", "The Amazing Monstrous Grady" and the great Suite divided into five parts "The Chosen One": "Baptism", "Transfiguration", "Crucifixion", "Resurrection" and "Ascension". You must listen to the album many times, to discover all the beautiful pieces from this amazing work. Brilliant and fantastic, an amazing album and band, highly recommendable... The

CIRCU5/STEVEN
TILLING
CIRCU5 is the project of multi-instrumentalist and vocalist, Steve Tilling. Five years in the making, the album features guest performances from Dave Gregory (XTC, Big Big Train), Phil Spalding (Mike Oldfield, Seal), Matt Backer (Julian Lennon, ABC), Alan van Kleef (Rachel Stamp, Ariel X), Johnny Warman (Peter Gabriel, Ringo Starr) and Andy Neve (Steve Hackett, Godley & Creme). The album's styles are almost as schizophrenic as its story is psychopathic. Songs like My Degenerate Mind, Stars and Blame It On Me recall Foo Fighters and Queens of the Stone Age at their snarling best. Elements of the cerebral five-part prog epic The Chosen One, evoke King Crimson and Yes, and the dizzying time changes of Cardiacs. Meanwhile, songs like, Coming Home, Strings, The Chosen One – Baptism and Ascension draw comparisons to Jethro Tull, Radiohead, Jellyfish, and Nick Drake, respectively. Space-rock poetry conjuring Hawkwind gets a look in with the apocalyptic Days Erased. Even funk grooves reminiscent of King's X feature in The Amazing Monstrous Grady. "The album mirrors the ups and downs in my life while making it," says Steve Tilling. "There were dark times, but everything ended positively. I wanted to make an album that's fun to listen to but has a good story for those who like to dig deeper." Clues to the album's story are dotted throughout the lyrics and packaging, but Steve is happy to give away the essence: "It traces the life of a baby raised until age three in a secret government organisation, which aims to cure psychopathy while harnessing positive psychopathic traits for certain business and military roles. The character discovers the truth as a dysfunctional adult – with catastrophic consequences." |
