|......................................THE BAND AND RECORD OF THE MONTH|
It´s a pleasure for me write this words about a new revelation project called Sleepwalker Sun. This is a powerful and varied statement from a musical projects that has huge potential, formed by talented musicians, combining a diverse musical experience in a dynamic blend of musical styles, where all them have a large curriculum in Progressive Rock scene. The dominant style of Sleepwalker Sun is a mixture of Progressive Rock with a hard-edged of symphonic elements, that will take you back to the late 70s soundwise but still with a very strong sound and a excellent production. The songs, on this project, are varied, and all compositions are imaginative, we can listen symphonic tracks, extremely melodic and strong, with some different grooves, many intense guitars textured sounds, layered keyboards and an energetic rhythm section. So this is a welcome Project to come out these days. If you are Looking for something new and exciting in the world of Progressive Rock, of course Sleepwalker Sun will be a best choice. Brilliant, amazing fantatic and an indispensable work, highly recommendable...
musicians on Sleepwalker Sun are:
The starting point of this project was the break-up of Revealing Web, a band Luiz Gustavo Alvim was part of, and which has its final line up as Giana Araújo - vocals, Leandro Furtado and Henrique Mendes (guitars), Marcos Eichler (bass), André Geléia (drums) and myself (keys and vocals).
Falcon and Luiz Gustavo Alvim were then starting a band, initially
a power trio, ELP-alike, with them dividing the vocal parts. A few months
after Revealing Web break-up, Luiz Gustavo Alvim started to think
that not recording the songs they had made then, would be a waste. They
changed the concept of the new band, asking Giana to join them.
Everyone was involved with different bands and musical projects, so Luiz Gustavo Alvim took the front of Sleepwalker Sun, making new songs, and rearranging the old ones, mixing them with new passages. Luiz recorded the demos with his PC, and that was it. It was ready for entering the studio. But before it, Luiz needed to call in other musicians. Rodrigo Martinho was the first to join him, Francisco and Giana. It was a natural choice, as they played together in 2112, a Rush cover band. They would also record the songs at his studio. Most of guitars were played by Leandro Furtado and Fabio Montserrat. Leandro was also a key part of Revealing Web, with great contributions in composition land. Fabio is also a great friend, and helped a lot during the demo era, recording the guitar solos.
But Luiz wished the contribution of two fantastic guitarists from Niterói, Alex Martinho and Ricardo Marins, that didnít hesitate at accepting his invitation, recording both superb leads and rhythm guitars. Those werenít the only special guests. Andre Mello, from brazilian prog band "Tempus Fugit", made a great mooggish solo in Nocturnal and Ricardo Aguiar from "Terra Molhada" made special the backings from the same song. At last, but not least, a super special appearance from brazilian prog monster Marcus Viana - "Sagrado Coração da Terra", which can be heard in "Jalenís Eyes" and "Blindfold". Everyone made a terrific job and he has no words to thank them properly. He just plays it and listen.
The amazing female vocalist, whose voice ranges from powerful to delicate with great ability, brings softness and energy to the songs. The keyboards are symphonic and bombastic, mixing Grand piano, Mellotron, Moog and Hammond organ with some modern synth sounds. The guitars provide a melodic and intense sound, with fragile arpeggios and hard riffs, alternating some great solos and acoustic moments. Bass and drums provide a rhythmic and technical background, sometimes aggressive, sometimes melodic, again.
To give a classical touch, a guest violin was added in two songs, courtesy of violinist Marcus Viana (Sagrado) Ė simply one of the most brilliant musicians in the current Brazilian music scene. He has an intense and wonderful work with Sagrado, besides a much celebrated solo career with soundtracks. Andre Mello (keyboardist fromTempus Fugit) contributes with his magnificent talent in one song, as well as Alex Martinho (guitars) with extremely technical solos and riffs in another one. Also a male vocalist was added to bring more diversity to their music in two songs. Many other guests appear on the CD, which was mixed by Alexandre Rabaço and mastered by Luiz Tornaghi, who works with well know Brazilian artists such as Lulu Santos, Leila Pinheiro and Danilo Caimmy, among others.
Sleepwalker Sun artwork was created by designer Gustavo Sazes, that has already signed covers of such brazilian bands as "Tribuzy", "Fates Prophecy", "Imago Mortis", among others.
